IIT JAM Exam Pattern

The JAM 2023 Examination will be computer-based for all seven Test Papers (CBT). The test will last 3 hours for each of the seven Test Papers. All Test Papers will be administered in English alone. There will be a total of 60 questions, each worth 100 points. The paper will be divided into three parts: A, B, and C. All parts are required.

The following categories of questions will be asked in each section:

Section A has 30 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), with 10 questions worth one mark each and 20 questions worth two marks each. Each MCQ contains four possible answers, only one of which is right. Candidates can mark their preferences by clicking on it.

Section B has ten Multiple Select Questions (MCQs) at two points each. Each MSQ is comparable to an MCQ, with the exception that MCQs may include one or more right selections from the four offered options. The applicant receives full credit only if he or she picks all correct answers and no incorrect responses. Candidates can mark the answer(s) by choosing the appropriate option (s).

Section C has a total of 20 Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions, with 10 questions for one mark each and 10 questions worth two marks each. The response to these NAT questions is a signed real number, which must be typed using the virtual numeric keypad on the display. There will be no options for NAT questions.

In all parts, questions that are not tried will result in a zero score. The incorrect response in Section A (MCQ) will result in negative marks. For each incorrect response to a one-mark question, one-third of a mark will be removed, and for each incorrect answer to a two-mark question, two-thirds of a point will be deducted. There are no negative or partial marking provisions in Section – B (MSQ). Section – C (NAT) also has no negative marking.
