The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India entrance examination that primarily examines the candidate’s overall mastery of several UG Engineering/Technology/Architecture and PG Science disciplines. Every year, the GATE is jointly administered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). It is a qualifying entrance test for admission to postgraduate (PG) degrees (M.E, M.Tech, and Ph.D.) at IISc and IITs.
The GATE activities in each of the eight zones are supervised by a zonal GATE Office at the IITs or IISc. The test is administered by the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.
A valid GATE score is required to get financial aid during master’s and direct Doctoral programs in engineering/technology/architecture. According to MHRD guidelines, the following procedure should be followed for admission to post-graduate programs (Master’s and Doctoral) with an MHRD scholarship or assistantship.
Depending on the norms adopted by a specific institute or department of the Institute, a candidate may be admitted directly into a course based solely on GATE performance or on GATE performance plus an admission test/interview conducted by the department to which he/she has applied and/or the candidate’s academic record.
